Over 15 years ago, when I first came to Edinburgh to study I had a trusted friend who was struggling financially. I loaned her my student loan on the understanding that she would pay me back when she got the right job she seemed definite to get. I worked with her in Zimbabwe as an aid worker with H.E.L.P - Humanitarian Education and Long Term Aid Projects during the summer of our first year at Edinburgh Uni.
After taking the toxic anti-malarial drug "Lariam" I became unwell in Africa was forced to drop out of university. My family looked after me through depression, illness and a messy legal case. Guilietta Durante cut off all contact with me. Africa had cost me my life savings, my sense of trust and my mind.
My parents really bore the brunt of it. I feel so thankful for family and friends who supported me through those difficult times. I'm incredibly lucky to have had that kind of support. Although I felt betrayed by my closest friend I found that people that I didn't even think I knew went out of their way to help me. The kindness of strangers isn't something you fully appreciate till close friendship deserts you.
Struggling to hold down any kind of job or college course many years later through sleepless nights I wrote this song in the peaceful haven of a cottage near Gorebridge.
